Cute room, had everything we needed, was close to bars and nightlife for a group of 3 in their late 20s. However as a family place I wouldn't bring my child here, this is not really the place for it. But for people who enjoy going out at night and drinking it works.

I think one of the best advantages of the Monarch hotel is its closeness to Jebena cafe. You have a nice breakfast at this cafe and then head to business around there.

ALWAYS ENJOY SF AND JUST USE HOTEL FOR SLEEPING. THE ELEVATOR NEEDS AN UPGRADE AND THE TV IS OLD AND HAS TOO FEW CHOICES. ALSO COULD NOT GET A CALLOUT SIGNAL FOR MY CELLPHONE IN THE ROOM. HAD TO GO DOWN TO THE LOBBY TO MAKE A CALL. OVERALL THOUGH, THE HOTEL WAS FINE FOR MY PURPOSES.

The hotel is in a good central location with plenty of great restaurants nearby and walking distance to museums. The neighborhood is a bit noisy until about midnight. The room was cold until I turned on the heater which had only one setting which turned the room into a sauna. We loved it. It was small and older style hotel. Great view and their layout of the room is perfect. The only thing that did not work while we were there is the hotel phone. We will be going back to this hotel

It's a bit run down, rooms are outdated and dirty. Hotel reaks of ciggarette smoke. But - its a cheap place to stay if you just need a bed to crash in.

Though not actually dirty, the hotel just felt badly put-together. The lower areas look like they were once very nice, but haven't really been maintained in a very long time. I tried to ask about the problem, and the receptionist didn't even bother to end what appeared to be a personal phone call. He could have even told me to come back. In fact he just fobbed me off with a half-fix to the problem, without even really hearing what the issue was. There are a lot of homeless people in the area. If you're not used to these kinds of cities (there are homeless people where I'm from but not so many), I recommend approaching from the East (Van Ness) rather than via the Tenderloin, as it felt a lot safer to me. It served its purpose. Beds not very comfortable and it was freezing the heater things knob was broken.

We enjoyed our stay at the Monarch last week. We enjoyed the convenience of the location with coffee shops and movie theater near by. New windows being installed cut down on the noise outside. Bus line made it easy to get around. The price was right and the room was clean! It wasn't fancy but it worked out for us.

Very nice hotel to avoid exorbitant prices in other luxurious hotels. A bit noisy during night but it happens in all big cities.

My first 2 nights were difficult, I was supposed to be in the non-smoker area however the smell of smoking was all over the place... I went alone, and after being there I would not go back with my wife or a friend...

Dated and soulless. Rooms tended to smell damp/sour even after cleaners had been. Good location only 10 mins walk to central square. Noisy during night due to traffic. Staff not very friendly (different person every day).

unfortunately no breakfast (except coffee and tea) the furniture is not new but for a 2 star hotel its really clean, comfortable and nice, thats all you can expect for this cheap price. very good for young people, who cant efford much money for a room but still want to have something clean.

I picked this hotel for its location and its price and was not disappointed. The location, on the edge of the Tenderloin, is probably not for everyone, but I wanted something near the War Memorial Opera House and this was it (also with Mel's Diner in the same bock.) If you are looking for a bargain in San Francisco, look no further. It's an old hotel but it is pretty well kept, clean, and the lobby is charming. My sole complaint is noise. Do not stay at this hotel!! This Hotel is located in front of a homeless building in a very dirty area and the hotel facility lacks in everything. I was very disappointed with this hotel, and I would NEVER recommend it to anyone.

while waiting on the valet to park my car being there is no where to park by the motel all my windows in my car got busted out. We only had time to get the luggage out of the car and within that time someone had time to bust all my windows and no one seen anything. The Hotel itself is a good place to lay your head if you plan to be out and about most of the time. It is not in an ideal location, being the Tenderloin district, we were expecting a few down and outs , however there were far more homeless people and drug addicts then we expected in and around the area. The walk itself to Union Square is only approx 10-15 mins , so in this respect good location , but be prepared for the lifestyle of the homeless on the street, and sometimes the unpleasant smells along the way. Saying this they dont give you any bother apart from asking for money every now and then. I would not recommend you being alone at night in the area.
