Every interaction we had with the staff was stellar. The first room we were given, however, smelled of urine worse than the homeless shelter we volunteer in--no kidding. The carpet (and bedding) was at least 20 years old, mildewy and filthy with years of sand and ocean water. My husband was having trouble breathing even as we were airing it out, so […] we went to the front desk and they moved us immediately to what turned out to be a *substantially* upgraded room. There was still a faint scent, but the carpet, furniture, and bedding had all been replaced in the past 5 years. If I could be guaranteed the quality of room that we received in the end, I would definitely return, but since there is no guarantee, I don't think I would risk it. If you do make a reservation, I recommend calling and confirming placement in the 5- or 6- buildings, which are actually on the beach and upgraded, while the 1- 2- and 3- buildings are on the main grounds (nearer the pool) across the street from the beach. We felt picture on website were very misleading as far as condition of motel. Very old and rundown. Was a disappointing way to end our trip to Maui. Glad it was only 3 nights. Staff was very accommodating and helpful though. Inconvenient parking.

This is a great "old school" place. It's not the Ritz nor does it pretend to be. The room was clean and large enough, we had oceanfront rooms which were perfect! A great place in a great area, close to good snorkeling, surfing and beach combing. Other reviews claimed they are renovating the property. Upon check in I asked if I was going to be in a renovated room and they said yes. The room I was in looked like it had not been renovated in 20 years. Old carpeting, old raton furniture, outdated fixtures and decor. There was nothing new about this room. The ground were poorly maintained. The "Lua" […] the offered was on a make shift stage because their primary one had burned down which they did not bother to remove. Instead they used gaudy caution tape to section it off. With that said the beds were comfortable and the room served as a place to sleep and get ready for the day. Rooms and property are very old and in need of upgrades. We cut our stay short and requested a refund.

Although the room wasnt spectacular, it was clean. The cot that we needed for our son wasn't in the best condition but the room was big enough. Don't expect to get the room/bed type you request. Although not luxurious, this was a very pleasant hotel with basic amenities. We did not have a car, which would be highly recommended if staying at this hotel. Beautiful views and very affordable. Very friendly and helpful staff.

After much discussion with my wife, here's what we decided. It was much better then sleeping on the airplane. We just needed one night before our condo was available, so we booked a room at the Maui Lu. The grounds were very nice and seemed well maintained, pool nice, wifi, movies from an onsite machine, etc. The room was clean too but since the […] room is so outdated it added an anxiety and uncomfortableness that was impossible to overlook. For another short stay I'm sure if the price was right we'd stay another night. If the rooms had a new feeling and look to them though, this would be a great place to stay long term. it is an older hotel but very well kept. We only stayed one night but for the price it was great.

This hotel is in a good location. It is marginal condition...needs a lot of maintenance. Has a nice pool and the staff was very friendly. if you have to spend an extra day because of flights....this place works ok for that.....I would not stay here for my vacation however. There is one separate unit of the hotel that is all boarded up and falling apart....a […] real eyesore. We needed a 1 nite stay and this served the purpose. Room was small, buildings old and many in need of repair and update. The grounds are beautiful but I would not stay there again.

Maui Lu is an affordable place to stay in a good location. Rooms are older but clean. Great place to stay if you're simply looking for a place to sleep, but not necessarily a place to hang out all day. (it's not on the beach but close) Staff was friendly and helpful.

I have been going to the Maui Lu for many years, and I still enjoy their ocean view and ocean front rooms. If you like to fall asleep to the sound of the surf, this is the place for you. Rooms are clean and although older and a little worn, pretty well maintained. The refrigerator, coffee maker, free newspaper, parking and internet are all big pluses. […] The staff are extremely helpful....willing to assist with luggage or an extra blanket or whatever you might need. They now have a luau group using part of the hotel grounds which is quite pleasant. Easy drive to "downtown" Kihei and an easy connection to the main road to Lahaina or Kahului. Pretty disappointed with the Hotel.It was supposed to be a 3 star hotel when I made reservations with Hotels.com It is a good 30-40 min drive from Lahaina , where you want to be . Was charged $30 some dollars for a resort fee when we checked in the first day, was never told about this when made reservations. The coffee maker was broken, asked them to […] replace it , a day passed no one did anything, next day took it up to front desk , got a new one , same problem , had spend on buying coffee every morning else where. Water Cooler/Hot water not available in main lobby as well. No Hair Dryer in room. Very Bad TV reception, not clear at all, asked room service to fix, Were told that this was the best they could get. being from Hawaii (Lana'i), we were pleasantly surprised with both the hotel itself (beautiful setting), and its location. we would certainly stay there again.

This is a quiet spot and has a good beach. It is the lower end of the price range and I was concerned but we found it to be fine. We had bad mannered neighbours but the hotel staff sorted it out swiftly (at 3am so that was excellent. Note the daily resort fee.

We were initially assigned at Rm 162 and found out that the sliding door would not lock.Eventually,we had to be re-assigned to Rm 166.The staff must continually check the condition of door locks for obvious security reasons. The wi-fi was very slow & erratic ! The bathroom accesories limited. The receptionist on arrival seemed to have a 'bad' day ! No feeling of being welcome on arrival. Check-out was better ! LOcation was not the best - neither close to restaurants nor to the beach. Evening Lua was too expensive and the program not value for money !

I've stayed many times at the Maui Lu, primarily because of its central location. But this time they have added a new twist which has me believing they are modeling the greedy airlines to enhance their bottom line. A $10 / day "Amenities fee" has been added which includes use of the pool, a daily newspaper and a movie or two. I didnd't use the pool, […] nor did I watch a movie. The Maui News is a fine little newspaper, but hardly worth $10 each morning. It's little things that often leave a bad taste and cause frequent travelers like myself to look elsewhere next time. My husband and i enjoyed out stay. He wasn't feeling good so we allowed to check in early. We ended up with a oceanview room. Very pleased!

As I was staying there I talked to a few locals that knew the company (Aston) that ran the hotel. Apparently they have it leased to them by a Hawaiian family for 100 years. Because they don't actually own it they won't do any improvements on the building. For example the showers are so old and the pressure is so hard you basically have to fight to stay […] in the shower. On top of that it doesn't stay one temperature. Goes from super hot to cold in a second. The road leading up to the parking has huge potholes and some of them are so deep it scratched the bottom of the car. Every room comes with the same bed which is ROCK hard. Fortunately they gave me an egg crate foam pad, which made only slightly better. There are basically no amenities. Only free wifi in the room, a fridge, unlimited access to something like redbox and a pool. There is nothing walking distance so if you do stay there ,or anywhere in Maui, rent a car. Even the beach in walking distance was very dull. The only positive thing I can say about this place is there was very good customer service. They were very helpful and friendly. Ok hotel but we would not stay there again. It felt dirty and run down. No view from our room. The kids didn't like the pool.

When we arrived we were shocked that it looked nothing like the pictures. The room had ants,the bedding was dirty, the tub/shower was dirty and rusty and the bathroom had mold on the ceiling. Thank goodness we only had to stay there 1 night. Gross,gross,gross! Never again!

The beachfront rooms have an awesome view. The rooms are old school but comfortable. The luau on sight was a blast and the staff was very helpful. Kihei is NOT Waikiki but it is a fun place and the water sports are awesome.

a great place to sleep on our way to another Hotel. The room reminded me of a old 70's Jersey Shore same bed spreads. Hotel just a lot cleaner. the location of course was beautiful. Didn't like the extra resort fee... glad I rented that movie from the video machine.

The room was nice. The beds were not super comfortable for someone with a bad back. But, not bad. The only problem that we had was that the key did not turn well in the door. It was very hard to open. The key for the safe was easy going in but, very difficult to get it out.

Everything about the hotel was awful. It started with our check-in experience and our less than friendly greeting from the receptionist. It then continued to our room which smelled of mold, and everything felt wet. Furthermore, the bathroom had a less than desirable stench. The hotel was "full" and our room change request could not be accomidated and […] we were assured that everything would be better the next day. Alas, the trip got worse. There were dead insects in our room, it was still moist everywhere and we slept with the window open just to get some fresh air. Lastly, when I checked out they informed me at that time there was an ammenities fee for everyday I was there. I did not know about these fees until I checked out. Furthermore, instead of answering my questions the receptionist seemed more interested in the personal call I took her away from than helping me. DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL. One of the worst hotels I have ever been to. Very poorly maintained, old, dirty, moldy and sand fleas. I was so taken back from what I thought it was going to be. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone even my worst enemy.

We really enjoyed our stay. The staff was friendly, the room was large, the whole resort was so quiet and peaceful. It is an older facility, but has vintage Hawaii charm, we will definitely return!

We stay at the Maui Lu every May. We return because we are very satisfiied with the overall conditons at your hotel. I did however need to point out the fact that one of the bed frames in our room was too short and that someone could possibly get hurt by it. It caused us no bother, just thought it's be safe to alert your company. And may I suggest painting […] the rim of the pool a tan color so it does not appear dirty. I know the pool is clean, I've seen the attendant clean it, it just "appears" dirty because of the stain on the rim. We swim everyday when we are there and do not see a problem with it, but, to some appearance does matter. I thank you for contiuing to satisfy. Aloha! and see you next May! Dina. Need to upgrade some things, especially the TV's, they are very old.

I chose this hotel because it was cheapest on all of the Maui and wasn't disappointed about my choice. Upon arrival I was informed that I was upgraded to the Ocean view room which was quite a pleasant surprise. Looks like since the season was over plus because Hawaii lost large chunk of its usual customers -- Japanese -- the hotel was rather quiet and […] empty. Room was good, though couple things were off but I'm sure the hotel management is well aware of those tiny things. Settings were pretty and lawn in front of the hotel is nice, also the hotel is short ride from the best beaches of South Maui (the immediate shore is not very swimmable). A great hotel at a semi reasonable price. Although the hotel is old looking (especially the room door) it is clean comfortable and well maintained. Also quiet. Recommend for good stay in an area not so heavily touristy.

We stayed here before we had our condo for a week reserved and after for 1 night, then 2 nights. The price is VERY reasonable for Maui. It is on the north side of Kihei, so you will have to drive south for food or any other sort of action. It is right across the street from the beach. Beautiful grounds, BUT the place is dated. Bathrooms need alot of […] work, but for the price, who can complain? We tend to think the place is up for sale and the owner is just cashing in before the place gets demolished. One of the complexes is abandon and delapidated and the original cabins in the back of the grounds are abandon as well. BUT it is a great place to start or end your vacation!!! The location is nice if you stay next to the beach but the room is not worth the price paid.

The hotel has different buildings, two of them on the beach, accross the street from the main building. The ocean front building is nearly in the ocean. I have never been so close to the ocean in any hotel. I think I was upgraded to a suite but the bedroom was in a loft and very very hot. There was an air conditionning unit but it was so noisy we couldn't […] sleep. With the windows open, we could only hear the street traffic. We had to sleep on the sofa bed on the main floor, which was not as confortable as the bed. The ocean side building has many rooms with an ocean view, mainly on the second floor. But the people in the rooms closest to the road could only hear traffic noise, and not the waves. There are two beautiful beaches but the water was very brown. Maybe the time of the year. Beautiful sunsets on the ocean and many whale sightings right from our balcony. Had to take the car for restaurants. The only one we could walk at was a very expensive sushi restaurant. Older hotel on spacious grounds with nice landscaping. Good location, easy access, large room with high ceilings. Good air conditioning. No microwave oven in the room, but there is a common microwave oven in the office area. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful.
