Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa

Very enjoyable, comfortable hotel experience.

Check in slow, room basic, no pressure on hot water tap, tap loose, parking not at hotel - 200 yard up road. Went to use car in evening and it was blocked in by 30 cars solid parked in entire car park. Evening meal - slow service, people had sat after us and finished their meals and gone before ours came. Other half ordered a steak ‘rare’ came back very over cooked and was bland. I got the chicken dish and was warm, not hot. Was ok. Just ok. When mentioned at check out ( we put everything on the room bill ) the bloke on the counter just said ‘very good’ as if we had asked something entirely different. For somewhere that claims to be posh and for the up market it was pretty cr@p. Would not recommend.

The room is clean, although we did find loose strands of hair under the pillow, but no real bother. The room could do with some updating and modernisation, for example, the fridge and TV are something from the early 2000s. They should advertise that the king beds are two beds pushed and locked together with two separate mattresses, the middle of the bed was horrible as you could feel the mattress edges. The staff are friendly and ready to help which was great and the location is fantastic. Breakfast service was great with great quality of food. The shower was great, very good water pressure. Overall a decent stay

The hotel looked lovely and old from the outside, inside was quality, furniture, rooms , staff all perfect. The only downside was the cramped car park ( and the hotel was not at full capacity) and we had to pay £15 to be almost blocked in by a member of staff !

Great location. Decor was tired and didn't warrant the price of the room.

Very welcoming and professional and Covid friendly

Having stayed at many a McDonald hotel we expected the same high standards. On check in we had booked a standard double room for us & my sister in law with her husband. We were told that our room had been upgraded. So expecting something lovely we headed to our upgraded room. Well for it to be an upgrade we were gobsmacked!! Nothing like the standard room we had booked......it was in back of hotel & although it was a large room.....it had no window at all.....just a skylight window. The paintwork was cracked & flaking off the walls & just generally run down 😞 We complained to hotel but was fully booked. Staff werent the most helpful or polite & although the breakfast was lovely......the staff had that "can't be arsed" attitude. The hotel is in a fab location but having stayed in the Cranleigh boutique hotel 6mth earlier which was far superior for the same money......we won't be booking the old England again

Fantastic location overlooking the lake and also just minutes from the shops and restaurants. Room 22 has a private balcony from where you can watch the ferries and little electric boats come and go. Very good breakfast menu and booking your breakfast time slot cuts down on waiting for your food. Valet parking is available for £20 per day.

Friendly staff and fantastic location, we booked a suite with balcony and amazing views (weather permitting) It was our 10th wedding anniversary and i requested a bottle of bubbly for the room this unfortunately was missed and i didn't chase it up. We had to book separately each day for a breakfast slot this was a minor hassle.and our choice wasn't available.. expedia has wrong parking rate.

Location is everything and this is great. We were there for 7 nights. Menu in Restaurant for evening meal did not change which was disappointing. Our room was adequate which is less than expected for a hotel of this calibre. Not enough drawer storage, bathroom door didn’t close unless locked. Our room at the front was very noisy at night. But overall we were quite happy.
