Comfortable Amsterdam Retreat
I spent quite a bit of time searching for an affordable Amsterdam hotel with two separate beds. When I found Hotel Alexander, I was a bit concerned with the size of the rooms, but booked anyway. I don't regret that decision one bit! We did have a small room, but the hotel does an excellent job of packing a lot into a small area. The beds were easily separated, plush, and comfortable, with good bedding and accessible reading lights and power outlets. There was a small refrigerator and desk, with little treats just for us. The shower was really nice. The hotel itself is really comfortable, with a stylish dining area and reception. They offer luggage storage and 24/7 coffee and water. We chose not to have a car for the Amsterdam portion of our trip, but we did notice plentiful parking on the street in front of the hotel. I hear it's expensive, though.

6/10 Good

Poor service and stained mattress / pillows.
When I arrived the receptionist was very friendly. She assisted me in finding re-sale tickets for an attraction I wanted to visit. When I got to my room the experience was not so good. My mattress was stained, there was no mattress cover on it. I reported this to the receptionist (a different person from the one I met on arrival). She tried to convince me that a sheet is a mattress cover because it covers the mattress! I did not accept this. She was unable to find a spare mattress cover. I requested an extra sheet to put on the bed instead. The pillows did have covers on them but they were heavily stained. I asked for these to be removed. The spare pillow in the wardrobe had hairs all over the pillow cover so I didn’t use it. There were no spare pillows in the hotel, so I slept for two nights without a pillow. The room fan had strings of dust hanging off it, I cleaned this myself. I was informed that housekeeping would correct the mattress/ pillow problems the next day. They did not, in fact they made the matter worst by removing my extra sheet. Rather than dealing with the staff again, I got an extra sheet myself from the laundry cupboard on the corridor. Apart from the receptionist I met on arrival I found the other staff were unhelpful. They didn’t seem to care about customer service. They were not in uniform. They did not look professional or seem to care about the guest’s experience. Location is excellent, service and cleanliness was poor.

We paid extra to have the room ready at noon instead of normal 3 pm check in since we had a red eye flight. Sadly, it wasn’t ready and we waited 45 mins, sleeping in the lobby. They were super nice about it and didn’t charge us the early check in fee so that was nice. We stayed in room 1, which was a bit noisy as it was street side and with no AC the windows were wide open.

Good location but unlike pictures.
The hotel was centrally located and the room was a good size for a short stay. However, it was not as nice as the pictures and the mattress was very uncomfortable.

No air conditioning in the rooms but there is in the lobby which was disappointing in 90 degree heat wave. Staff was very nice and helpful to book a taxi with ease. Room was dusty and had cobwebs on the walls. It was okay for the price we paid. Location felt safe and was quiet and easy walk to things we needed.

We were given a room off the main street which was very noisy and mentioned it was our 15th wedding anniversary ahead of our arrival but nothing was done to make it a special stay.

The hotel was on a quiet street near shops, restaurants etc and was clean, comfortable, convenient to tourist attractions, had good security. Staff were great - both helpful and friendly. All in all, an enjoyable stay.

Really cute hotel and a great location. My teenage daughters and I walked all around Amsterdam from this hotel, very close to lots of the sights. The front desk staff were all very nice and helpful. Free coffee and water in the lobby was a nice perk! Our room was on a lower level down very steep stairs (there was also an elevator), it had lots of space for us to move around in and a big bathroom and shower! Very quiet room, we couldn't hear anyone else in the hotel or outside. We had a lovely few days here!

The hotel is small and nice. The staff was kind, helpful and friendly. The rooms are a bit dated but have everything you need and the location is very convenient, the bus (397) to the airport is really close by. I liked this hotel.

Great location and staff, poor room
Hotel staff lovely, very friendly. Location great, very close to good public transport links to city centre and airport. Unfortunately the room wasn't great - quite dated overall, missing some modern conveniences (e.g. no power sockets next to the bed for charging devices, no in room thermostat), but the main things were 1) the windows which were incredibly draughty and let in almost all of the street noise which disturbed our sleep quite badly, and 2) the shower over the bath which I could not stand up fully in without hitting my head (I'm 185cm)
