Finca El Tambor is a truly special place—more of a retreat-style experience away from everything, than a traditional hotel. The absolute highlight was the breathtaking view of the surrounding hills and volcanoes..
The accommodations were cozy, with a very comfortable bed, small kitchen, and even a yoga mat, and welcome bottle of wine which was a nice touch. Just a heads-up: this is more of a glamping experience than a hotel stay, and it’s good to know that going in.
It’s located about 20 minutes outside downtown Antigua, and is also very close to Hobbitenango. The drive up is a winding dirt road along the edge of a mountain. It didn’t bother our Uber driver, but it might feel a bit nerve-wracking for those not used to that type of terrain as it is narrow and a bit rugged.
The biggest challenge for our group was getting to our accommodations. The paths are STEEP and cobblestone, and definitely NOT suitcase-friendly. One friend in our group, who is not an avid hiker like the other two of us, had a really hard time with the steep walk, and we’d strongly caution that this is not the best choice if you have any mobility issues or cannot navigate steep hills.
I will say that our hosts were extremely responsive and did everything possible to support and accommodate us, for which we were very grateful
Overall, Finca El Tambor is stunning, peaceful, and unique—but likely best suited for travelers who are comfortable with a more rustic and adventurous setting.
