1. Sheffield Botanical Gardens

Within Sheffield Botanical Gardens’ expansive 19-acre plot, winding paths will take your family on a journey through 18 differently themed areas. Opened in 1836, only the wealthy few were allowed access. Luckily, the gardens were acquired by one of the oldest charities in the UK who opened up the gardens’ glory for all to enjoy for free.

Discover the statue in one of the UK’s most intact examples of a 19th century bear pit, or search for bananas growing in the ornate Pavilions. If looking for intricately planted flower beds, the Victorian garden might take your fancy. Or, enjoy the soothing sound of running water in the network of waterfalls and ponds that make up the Rock and Water garden.

2. Kelham Island Museum

Steam engines and vintage cars by the riverside

Sheffield’s rich history of making things comes to life at this riverside museum, with exhibitions on everything from master craftsmen to mass production. Discover vintage cars built in Sheffield, see what life was like on the home front in the 1916 House and marvel at their mighty 425-tonne steam-engine. If around at either 12 pm or 2 pm, you’ll even get to hear it rumble and roar as it’s powered on.

Make sure you check out the Women in Steel exhibition that showcases the role of women in the steel-making industry, and check online before your visit for children’s workshops and visiting talks. The best thing about this museum? It’s free, but you can make a donation if you wish.

3. Zooby’s

4. Magna Science Adventure Centre

Families can immerse themselves in the world of science and technology at museums and science-based attractions like Magna Science Adventure Centre, in the nearby town of Rotherham. Four spectacular pavilions are devoted to the science of air, water, earth and fire, and more than 100 interactive exhibits will both educate and entertain kids.

The fun continues outdoors, where kids of all ages will love the massive adventure playground, complete with rockets, castles and slides. If the summer sun gets too much, you can cool off in their incredible water-themed play area called Aqua-Tek. 5. Graves Park

Sheffield’s largest park covers a whopping 248 acres, meaning an entire family day out can easily be spent enjoying its varied featured and facilities. Graves Park was originally developed in 1926 to protect several sections of 1000-year-old woodland, intersected by picturesque streams, and indeed these areas can still be explored and enjoyed today. Kids will also adore running through the vast open green spaces, perfect for picnics and games on a sunny day.

6. Weston Park

The city’s first municipal park

West of the city centre lies Weston Park, a Grade II listed green space surrounding an intriguing museum. Wander around the manicured lawns and the serene pond, then marvel at the vivid floral gardens before checking out some of the park’s historical memorial statues. The historic bandstand is worth a look, too, as it’s the last surviving one in Sheffield.

7. Rivelin Valley Trail

Winding through a scenic wooded valley is the Rivelin Valley Trail. It’s a 2.5-km (1.5-mile) family-friendly trek that hugs the river between Malin Bridge and Rivelin Corn Mill, with plenty of things to see along the way. The area’s industrial heritage can be seen in the ruins of watermills and dams, and there are sculptures and wildlife to spot between the alder, ash, beech, holly and oak trees. Plaques with QR codes are scattered throughout the trail should you wish to learn more.

Kids will adore the playpark and splashpad, and a welcoming cafe provides snacks and drinks. You’ll find 4 car parks nearby, or you can take the bus or tram to Malin Bridge.
