    Bačvice Beach

Join the locals who have been coming to this beach for decades

Bačvice Beach is a local favourite, opened as an official Split “bathing area” in 1919. This sandy beach (one of Split’s few beaches with actual sand) sits right in the heart of the city, near the port. Compared to some of the other beaches around here, it's absolutely massive – the beach can accommodate around 10,000 beachgoers at once.

Bačvice Beach is flanked by a promenade and is just as favoured for its beachside sports in the spring as it is for its waters. It’s not uncommon to see locals playing football, rugby or the regional favourite, picigin – a Split-claimed amateur sport played in shallow water that revolves around players trying to keep a ball dry.

Žnjan Beach is the largest beach in Split, located adjacent to Trstenik Beach. The rocky beach is covered in white pebbles, which does make it a little less comfortable for sunbathers, but its many services and amenities more than make up for it.

Restaurants and bars are found nearby, and it’s easy to find places that rent out both watersports equipment and lounge chairs (which is a good idea, given the pebbly shore). A playground provides a spot for children to play before, after or instead of swimming. Žnjan Beach also has outdoor showers, public restrooms and changing rooms.

Avoid the packed, touristy beaches of Split with a visit to Beach Trstenik

If your main concern with visiting the beaches of Split is the crowds of travellers congregating around the shorelines, then you want to make a beeline for Beach Trstenik. This quiet public beach is typically a local spot and offers a bit of a calmer experience than what you might find at beaches closer to the city centre.

Enjoy a day of sunbathing away from the crowds on Beach Trstenik. You’ll easily find many spots along the shore to purchase drinks and snacks. If you’re driving to the beach, parking is available at nearby hotels, which will also offer sun lounger rentals.

    Kaštelet Beach

Grab your water shoes and explore the waves

Kaštelet Beach sits near Beach Ježinac and offers a similar experience – a rocky and secluded beach, overlooked by a grove of pines. The beach is just a short walk from Split’s city centre but if you don’t want to walk, you’ll find easy parking nearby. The clean, crystal-clear water allows you to see colourful fish darting about below the surface.

Bring a pair of water shoes so you can explore, as the rocky shores are not kind to bare feet. The beach is popular with swimmers and kayakers. Unfortunately, there’s not a nearby spot to rent a sun lounger, so you’ll want to bring your own chair.

Kasjuni Beach is most notable for its spectacular views. Bumping up against Marjan Hill, the beach offers a backdrop of rocky, pine-covered hillside that provides not only a nice view but also relief from the sun.

The clear blue waters are calm and excellent for swimming. The narrow, pebbly beach isn’t quite comfortable for sunbathers all on its own, but you can rent a sun lounger from a nearby bar, which also provides drinks and snacks to beachgoers, most of which are locals.

Bene Beach is a favourite with families, thanks to its many amenities and shallow, swimmer-friendly waters. Beyond the waves, you'll find tennis courts, a playground, athletic facilities, picnic facilities, a restaurant and bar, outdoor showers and restrooms and even pony rides. The beach is also surrounded by pine groves that provide shade during scorching afternoons.

The heavily wooded areas around Bene Beach hold some historic appeal as the pine trees hide the historical landmark and ruins of the ancient Church of St. Benedict.

    Firule Beach

    Enjoy a calm, family-friendly atmosphere

Firule Beach often attracts parents with toddlers or young children who can’t swim, as well as beachgoers who want a calm atmosphere in Split. Its waters are somewhat sheltered, as the shape of the beach results in gentler waves. The fine sand isn’t half bad, giving beachgoers on this narrow, sandy strip a comfortable place to lay down their blankets.

Located adjacent to Firule Beach is a tennis court where several world-famous players like Nikola Pilic, Zeljko Franulovic, and Goran Ivanisevic used to train.

Ovcice Beach is located between Firule Beach and Bačvice Beach. This pebble beach is on the smaller side, with a lot of seagrass and deeper waters than you might find on Bačvice Beach.

A pier stretches out across the shore, where you’ll find a restaurant with seating and views of islands just off Split’s coast. Beachgoers are welcome to stop by the restaurant even in their swim attire for a drink or light lunch. You might even see some leaping from the end of the pier into the water.

    Beach Stobreč

Explore the calm, shallow waters of Beach Stobreč

Beach Stobreč lies to the east of many beaches in Split, offering waters that stay shallow for quite a way off the coast. The calm waters are preferred by those who want to swim without the worry of rough waves or other unfavourable water conditions.

The beach itself is very pebbly, but that shouldn’t dissuade sunbathers from visiting. Rentals are easily available, include paddleboard and boat rentals. Beach Stobreč is on the lengthy side – you’ll find beachgoers tend to congregate in certain areas, so if you’re looking for a little privacy, just walk along the shore until you find a more suitable spot.

Beach Ježinac is a long, rocky beach that boasts one of the best swimming spots in Split. A short walk from the city centre, the beach is primarily favoured by locals. Climb from the overlooking hill covered in pine trees down to the beach, which has its own car park, outdoor showers and restrooms.

Scuba diving is available for more adventurous travellers, and you’ll be sure to see some of Croatia’s abundant marine life if you take the scuba providers up on this opportunity. If you’d rather just relax, you can grab a drink from the beachfront bar and watch as local swimmers dive from the rocks into the bay.
