Wherever you go in Japan, visiting the best markets is a great way to get a better idea of the local culture. The same is true for Okinawa, which has a rich and unique culture to discover.

Surrounded by the sea, Okinawa is a great spot for fresh fish and seafood. Okinawan pork is also hugely popular, as are Okinawa's unique island vegetables and tropical fruits. It's no wonder that the markets here are so lively. Other types of market unique to Okinawa include pottery sales known as yachimun, flea markets run by US military personnel, and Sunday markets in shopping district where the locals gather.

    Chibana Flea Market

Chibana Flea Market is held on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays and Sundays of each month in the parking area of Chibana Golf Course, operated by the United States military.

On military bases in Okinawa, flea markets are often held to sell household goods, clothing, and appliances at reasonable prices because members of the military and staff don't take them with them when moving to new locations. Given its location in the car park of a golf course, you don’t need any ID to attend. It's an opportunity to enjoy a treasure hunt, perhaps finding antique American tableware or vintage jeans among the items for sale.
